In news from Washington, momentum seems to be growing among Republicans to call for the repeal the 14th Amendment in an attempt to block citizenship for children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants. The 14th Amendment states all persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. In the House, ninety-four Republicans have backed the Birthright Citizenship Act, and there is growing support among Republicans in the Senate. Huffington Post reports Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell supports a review of the 14th Amendment. On Sunday, Republican Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation and called for hearings to be held.

Sen. Jon Kyl: 'Well, actually, this is a constitutional provision in the 14th Amendment that has been interpreted to provide that if you are born in the United States, you are a citizen, no matter what. Now, there are limitations on that, for example, for the children of diplomats and so on. And so, the question is, if both parents are here illegally, should there be a reward for their illegal behavior?'"

Republicanos piden revocación de 14ª Enmienda

En noticias de Washington, el pedido por parte de los republicanos de revocar la 14ª Enmienda aparentemente está cobrando fuerza, en un intento por bloquear la ciudadanía para los hijos nacidos en Estados Unidos de inmigrantes indocumentados. La 14ª Enmienda establece que todas las personas nacidas o naturalizadas en Estados Unidos son ciudadanos estadounidenses y del Estado donde residen. En la Cámara de Representantes, 94 republicanos apoyaron la Ley de Derecho de Ciudadanía por Nacimiento y hay un creciente apoyo por parte de los republicanos en el Senado. El Huffington Post informa que el Líder de la Minoría del Senado Mitch McConnell apoya una revisión de la 14ª Enmienda. El domingo, el senador republicano Jon Kyl, de Arizona, estuvo en el programa Face the Nation, de CBS, y pidió que se lleven a cabo audiencias.

El senador Kyl dijo: “Bien, en realidad ésta es una disposición constitucional de la 14ª Enmienda que se ha interpretado para establecer que si uno nace en Estados Unidos es un ciudadano, sin importar nada más. Pero hay limitaciones a eso, por ejemplo, para los hijos de los diplomáticos, etc. Entonces la pregunta es: si ambos padres están aquí de forma ilegal… ¿deberíamos recompensarlos por su comportamiento ilegal?”.
