Arizona Considers Denying Citizenship to Children of Immigrants, June 14, 2010
Republicans in the state of Arizona are considering introducing legislation that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona to parents who are not legal US citizens. Such legislation would appear to violate the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which states that all persons born in the United States are citizens of the United States. The chief supporter of denying birth certificates to the children of immigrants is Republican lawmaker Russell Pearce. He recently helped draft Arizona’s new anti-immigrant law that orders police officers to stop and interrogate anyone they suspect is an undocumented immigrant.

Los republicanos del Estado de Arizona están considerando presentar una legislación que les negaría las partidas de nacimiento a los niños nacidos en Arizona cuyos padres no sean ciudadanos estadounidenses legales. Dicha legislación aparentemente violaría la 14ª Enmienda de la Constitución que establece que todas las personas nacidas en Estados Unidos son ciudadanos estadounidenses. El principal partidario de negarles las partidas de nacimiento a los hijos de inmigrantes es el legislador republicano Russell Pearce. Recientemente, Pearce ayudó a redactar la nueva ley anti inmigrantes de Arizona que le ordena a los oficiales de la policía que detengan e interroguen a cualquier persona que sospechen sea un inmigrante indocumentado.
