Plane Wreck at los Gatos (Deportee)
DEPORTEES
(Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)
words by Woody Guthrie, music by Martin Hoffman
The crops are all in and the peaches are rotting
The oranges are packed in the creosote dumps
They're flying you back to the Mexico border
To pay all your money to wade back again
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees
My father's own father, he waded that river
They took all the money he made in his life
My brothers and sisters come working the fruit trees
They rode the big trucks till they lay down and die
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees
The skyplane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon
A fireball of lightning, and it shook all the hills
Who are these comrades that died like the dry leaves
The radio tells me they're just deportees
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees
We died in your hills and we died in your deserts
We died in your valleys we died on your plains
We died 'neath your trees and we died in your bushes
Both sides of the river we died just the same
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees
Some of us are illegal, and others not wanted
Our work contract's out and we have to move on
But it's six hundred miles to that Mexican border
They chase us like outlaws, like rustlers, like thieves.
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees
Is this the best way we can grow our big orchards
Is this the best way we can grow our good fruit
To fall like dry leaves and rot on the top soil
and be called by no name except "deportee"
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees

Visual Art Today in Nogales Border
Alfred Quiroz Visual Art Today -The wall is military surplus,” explained the newspaper noting its war-like nature, “made of corrugated helicopter landing pads that U.S. troops once laid out in Vietnam’s jungles and in Kuwait’s deserts. The color of an ugly bruise, its sickly green merges with gun-metal gray. The perfect canvas, in other words, for a giant piece of political art.” [3] We, of course, know what these enigmatic figures are… they are milagros. And we know they are profoundly complicated, much beyond “political art.” I begin with this work that the art world calls “public art” but we might more accurately call “popular religion as public art” to give specificity to my proposal."

No cancelaré mi show.

And the rock band Rage Against the Machine has announced plans to hold a benefit concert on Friday in Los Angeles to raise money for organizations challenging the Arizona’s new anti-immigrant law. Band member Tom Morello has helped lead the "Sound Strike" artist boycott of Arizona.
Tom Morello: "We’re here today to support the international boycott of the state of Arizona in the wake of the passage of SB 1070. We’re here to use our music to unite people of all colors and economic strata in a single voice of solidarity to say no to legalized racial profiling. And we are here to rock this mother to the ground."

New Kind of Immigration Check Point in California
Unless you've been living under a rock (or have been consumed by American Idol), you know about the controversy surrounding the recent Arizona immigration law. I like playing the game of "flip the script," and wondering "what if" things were to play out differently? I think we turn out as better people, and our country is strengthened, when we stop to exam an issue from many perspectives. Enjoy.
[Video] "Do I look Illegal?" A question for Arizona
Legalizing racial/ethnic profiling will inevitably single out every person who fits the description both legal and illegal. This will open the path to statewide discrimination of all people who fit the illegal profile regardless of immigrant status. There has to be a better way, Arizona Immigration Law SB1070 is wrong for Arizona wrong for America.

Outcry Follows Migrant's Death
(SAN YSIDRO, Calif.) - A Mexican national who died after a confrontation with US border agents has become the latest symbol of the crisis surrounding US-Mexico relations and migrant affairs. Anastasio Hernandez Rojas, a 42-year-old father of five US-born children, died in a California hospital May 31, following a violent encounter with US Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego three days earlier. “We are deeply concerned about the incident,” Andrea Guerrero of the American Civil Liberties Union’s San Diego office told Frontera NorteSur. “We are calling for a transparent investigation of the incident.”

Video The Border
KPBS Documentary "The Border"
The Border," a two-hour documentary, features compelling story-driven vignettes narrated by journalist John Quiñones from ABC’s "20/20." This magazine-style program gives viewers the freedom to draw their own conclusions on these complex, multi-layered issues. This is the first time public television producers from different stations and different parts of the country have joined forces to produce a single program. While the border is a region all its own, the stories of border life in San Diego and Tijuana differ from the stories of border towns in California, Texas, New Mexico Arizona, Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. Any of the five production entities could have produced "The Border" alone, but the region is so diverse, sending producers and crew into communities where they have no ties would have been a daunting task. Launching a collaborative effort between KPBS, Espinosa Productions, KUAT, KNME and Galan Productions allowed the filmmakers to explore familiar territory and unearth stories that have special significance to their part of the region and capture nuances that only locals would know.
Basta Dobbs!
UPDATE:
Lou Dobbs Let Go by CNN!
WHO WE ARE
BastaDobbs.com is a fast-growing network of organizations and individuals engaged in a campaign to educate the Latino community about the threat posed by CNN’s Lou Dobbs.
Our Mission
Watch the video
BastaDobbs.com exists to change how the media reports on Latinos and immigrants in the United States, starting with the worst offenders: Lou Dobbs and his network, CNN. We focus on Lou Dobbs because he, more than any other media personality, has obsessed about and given voice to the most extreme views about immigrants and Latinos. And yet, because CNN refuses to translate Dobbs into Spanish, too few Latinos and immigrants are even aware of the role he plays in spreading fear and hatred in our communities.
Our campaign targets the dangerous nexus between anti-immigrant extremism and the media. At the same time that CNN profits from Dobbs’ brand of “news,” the network is courting Latino viewers by adding Latino talent and producing legitimate programming aimed at the Latino audience. BastaDobbs.com was created to shine the spotlight on this hypocrisy, and demand that CNN deal with its Dobbs problem once and for all. We are calling on Latinos and our allies to join us in telling CNN to stop Dobbs. Our dignity, safety, and self respect demand nothing less!

UPDATE:
Lou Dobbs to Quit CNN
By BRIAN STELTER AND BILL CARTER
New York Times (November 11, 2009)
Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration views made him a TV lightning rod, plans to announce Wednesday that he is leaving the network, two network employees said.
A CNN executive confirmed that Mr. Dobbs will announce his resignation plans on his 7 p.m. program. His resignation is effective immediately; tonight's program will be his last on CNN. His contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011.
Mr. Dobbs informed his staff members of his intentions in a meeting Wednesday afternoon. He did not immediately respond to a telephone call seeking comment.
Well known for his political positions, Mr. Dobbs is an outlier at CNN, which has sought to position itself as a middle ground of sorts in the fractious cable news arena. Perhaps hinting at plans for an exit from CNN, Mr. Dobbs met with Roger Ailes, the chairman of the Fox News Channel, last month. At the time Mr. Dobbs was viewed as a potential hire for the Fox Business Network.
The CNN employees said Wednesday that they did not know if Mr. Dobbs was moving to another network. He has placed new emphasis in recent months on his afternoon radio show, which debuted in March 2008.
Last month the New Jersey State Police were called to Mr. Dobbs home to investigate a report of gunfire. Mr. Dobbs suggested that his family had been singled out because of his views on illegal immigration and border security.

Beyond Borders
Voces Inocentes--Luis Mandoki, director of "Voces Inocentes", recently came out with a futuristic film titled "Traficante de Suenos" / "Sleep Dealer", which is supposed to be interesting. It features an Orwellian future with a "virtual bracero" program that people plug into...
Crossing Arizona
Romantico--There is an indie film called, "Romantico" which is the story of an immigrant from Michoacan living in San Francisco, California at the Mission district. It is an amazing story.
This story that I'm talking about, is a story of a guy that works at a car wash during the day, and as a troubador at night at the fast food restaurants to support his family in Michoacan. It is a really good movie/documentary to watch.
Bajo la Misma Luna--Another mainstream fictional film with Kate del Castillo.
Funny thing about it is (well, funny in a real depressing sort of way), Kate is one of them main beneficiaries of companies like Televisa, which make conditions so much worse for working people in Mexico, provoking migration. Anyway, the film is sympathetic toward migrants, for whatever that's worth.
Motel Paraiso
Goal
"With love, from Mexico" (which will be at theatres this Friday)
"A Million to Juan"by Paul Rodriguez' film
Sin Nombre-- According to the blurb: "Fleeing retaliation from the violent Central American street gang he has deserted, young hood Casper boards a northbound train, where he takes refuge on top of the moving freight cars and hopes for a fresh start in a new country. Dodging authorities and other dangers, he finds a new friend in Sayra, a Honduran girl. Cary Fukunaga directs."
Sleep Dealer --When Sundance lead programer Geoffrey Gilmore introduced Sleep Dealer, he claimed that it would be hard to describe the film without saying that “it’s unlike anything you’ve seen before.” And while his claim is very true, Sleep Dealer very much reminds me of George Lucus’ THX 1138. I am convinced that if Alex Rivera can do all this on such a low budget with a super 16 camera, that he will someday follow-up with a Star Wars sized epic. Rivera tells a story set in the backdrop of the near future to explore rising issues of today such as governments controlling oil and international border control.
Documentaries by Juan Carlos Frey. His website is www.gatekeeperfilm.com.
De Nadie. covers the train ride from Mexico's southern border north but from a documentary point of view, unlike Sin Nombre which is great drama. De Nadie (English title: No One) is a documentary by Mexican filmmaker Tin Dirdamal on the impoverished Central Americans who leave their countries in hope of a better life in the United States. It premiered in 2005 and was shown at different international film festivals, winning the Sundance Film Festival audience award for World Documentary in 2006. The film follows a number of refugees who have to cross Mexico, about 4,000 kilometers, before reaching the US border. On their way through Mexico they put their remaining money, dignity, health and life on the line. You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sLD9b5B4_c&feature=related
